Immune System

What is the Immune System?

The immune system protects our body from harmful substances that could make you ill.

When the immune system is strong we don’t even notice it is there. It’s only when it is weak or struggles to deal with aggressive germs, we become ill.

The main tasks of the Immune System are to:

  • Fight pathogens such as bacteria, viruses and fungi and remove them from the body
  • Neutralise harmful substances from the environment; and
  • Fight disease causing cells in the body

How it works

The main tasks of the Immune System are to:

  • Fight pathogens such as bacteria, viruses and fungi and remove them from the body
  • Neutralise harmful substances from the environment and
  • Fight disease causing cells in the body

The phagocyte is then able to send out a chemical signal, identified from the protein (antigen) on the surface of the pathogen, to the Lymphocyte.

Lymphocytes can remember these pathogens from the antigen on the surface of it.

They start to produce antibodies to remember these antigens. There are specific antibodies for each antigen. They are able to lock onto theses antigens and mark them for destruction by the phagocyte.

Once an antibody has been produced, it remains in the body and knows if the body is attacked by the same antigen(from the bacteria or virus)

This is why certain disease such as chickenpox only affect us once. Our body makes antibodies ready to destroy it if it attacks again!

Ways to strengthen our Immune System

Eat a healthy balanced diet. Vitamins A, D, C, and minerals zinc and selenium play a role in keeping the immune system strong.

Soluble fibre, probiotics, fish oil, and curcumin have all been found to strengthen our immune response.

Stress can affect our immune system. Ways to reduce stress are exercise and getting a good night’s sleep. Ingredients such as Ashwagandha, lavender and magnesium can help reduce stress in the body.
