Beetroot (Beta Vulgaris),also known as beets, is a popular root vegetable used in cuisines all over the world. Beetroot extract is from the root of the beet and is high in dietary nitrates. It is also a rich source of antioxidants and nutrients including vitamin C, magnesium, potassium and iron.
Sabeet® beetroot extract is a standardized extract containing no less than 2% nitrate. The extract has greater bioavailability due to it being water soluble, meaning that a greater amount is absorbed into the body. Sabeet® is a natural and rich source of dietary nitrates, with proven athletic performance benefits backed by a number of clinical trials. It is also supportive in maintaining overall cardiovascular health.
Cardiovascular disease is one of the main causes of death worldwide and one of the main risk factors for this is high blood pressure (hypertension). Beetroot extract has been clinically researched for its role in the management of hypertension which has shown promising results. Dietary nitrates have also been studied for their potential to enhance exercise performance.
Studies into the health benefits of beetroot, in particular inorganic nitrate, have shown that it is effective in reducing systolic blood pressure. A study using Sabeet beetroot extract on 20 healthy male volunteers was carried out over a period of 2 weeks to show change in blood pressure, heart rate, stroke volume and cardiac output. Results showed significant improvements in both cardiovascular and exercise performance.
Dietary nitrate supplements such as beetroot extract increase plasma nitrate and nitrite concentrations which in turn helps vasodilation and oxygen supply.
Beetroot is rich in inorganic nitrate. Following ingestion, nitrate is converted to nitrite and is stored and circulated in the blood. Nitrate can be converted to nitric oxide (NO) in conditions of low oxygen availability. NO plays an important role in vascular and metabolic control. Reduced NO bioavailability has been associated with increased risk of hypertension and cardiovascular disease.
